Eric Hallot from the Remote Sensing and Geodata Unit presented a paper on “Localising the urban population to optimize land management” (by Eric HALLOT, Lien POELMANS, Inge ULJEE, Benjamin BEAUMONT & Nathalie STEPHENNE).
Building the Smart Cities of tomorrow is a sustainable development challenge for both regional and local authorities. Being able to precisely quantify and locate the population is important for city management and risk analysis (pollution, flooding, waste, etc.). The SmartPop project proposes to disaggregate population statistics on the basis of the Walloon land use map (COSW). The adaptation and comparison of dassymetric mapping algorithms in Wallonia and in particular in Liège are presented in this paper. The calibration and validation of the first results use data from the National Register of Natural Persons. Asymmetric mapping is highly dependent on the quality and accuracy of the ancillary data. This paper illustrates the influence of the rasterization of this data on the quality of results in urban centers.
